The Italian Peninsular juts out into the Mediterranean Sea in the shape of a high-heeled boot. The Italian Peninsular includes of course
Italy but also includes
Malta,
San Marino and the
Vatican City also known as the Holy See. Malta is an island mass, separate from the Italian mainland. The two other islands of the Italian Peninsular and actually belonging to Italy are Sicily and Sardinia.
The Italian Peninsula is largely mountainous, with a low-lying central northern plain. The far north of the Italian Peninsula is home to a series of steep, mountainous alps. The Peninsula is long and narrow. The east enjoys a long coastline with the Adriatic Sea, the west faces both the Mediterranean and Tyrrhenian Seas. Volcano Mount Etna is located on the Island of Sicily, just off the south west coast and reaches a height of 3340m. Italy is famous the world-over for its art, cars, food, religion and the Roman Empire that was founded on these shores.
