Morocco is situated on the North Coast of Africa in close proximity with Spain across the straights of Gibraltar. It is a land of Beautiful red-orange sunsets, and bustling open-air markets, selling jewellery, carpets, colourful clothing and hashish. Snake charmers, fascinating cultures and mouthwatering dishes are just some of the many delights awaiting those who visit Morocco. Because of its close proximity to Europe, Morocco is a country free from many of the hassles of other African nations.

The total land area of Morocco is 446,550 sq km, including 446,300 sq km of water. Much of Morocco is mountainous and indeed the main geographical feature of the country is the Atlas mountain range. It stretches some 600km across Morocco and has many soaring peaks including Dj Toubkat that exceeds 4100m. These mountains are a haven for intrepid mountaineers and are world renowned for being amongst the world's most famous ranges. The main tributary of Morocco is the Moulouya River, which flows through the Northern Atlas Mountains and filters out into many smaller rivers. The Northern Coastline measures some 1,835km.

Due to the existence of many mountainous areas, the climate of Morocco can be extremely varied from region to region. A steady precipitation of rain falls within the cities that occupy the Northern Coastal Plain, with temperatures being considerably higher towards the beginning of the Sahara Desert in the south of Morocco. In the mountains, conditions become hazardous with some elevations receiving heavy winter snowfall.

Casablanca and Marrakech are main cities, although the capital Rabat may be slightly less renowned. Tangier in the North, is the largest Moroccan city within close proximity to Europe. It is a popular destination with Spaniards, who overnight in Morocco and return the next day fully loaded with souvenirs from mystical markets. Morocco used to be a French protectorate and French is still widely spoken along with English and of course the main language, Arabic. The people of Morocco are amongst the friendliest in the region and seem very receptive toward weary outsiders.

The economy of Morocco is concentrated in the areas of phosphate rock mining, leather and textile manufacturing, and tourism. Regular foreign investment into local business also helps the economy to stay afloat. Moroccan Dirham is the local currency.
