Armenia is an ex-Soviet state located in the Lesser
Caucasus Mountains, landlocked and bordered by Azerbaijan in the
east, Iran to the south, Georgia to the north and Turkey due west.
The total landmass of Armenia is 28,400 sq km with a further 1400 km
of water. The terrain is largely mountainous. The most fertile
region is the Aras valley, an area that is home to some very fast
flowing rivers. The highest point of elevation is Aragats
Lerrnagagat' at a height of 4090m. The lowest elevation is the Debed
River at 400m. Lake Sevan is the largest lake within Armenia.
Natural resources include small amounts of gold, copper and Zinc.
Independence was claimed from the former Soviet Union in 1991.
Disputes for land between Armenia and neighbouring Azerbaijan were
the cause of much conflict between 1988 and 1994. The capital city
of Armenia is Yerevan. The ethnic mix is comprised mostly of
Armenians with a few Russians and Yezidi Kurds. The main language is
Armenian although a small percentage of the population speaks
Russian. The national unit of currency is the Dram.
Largely influenced by what the former Soviet Union installed as an
economy, Armenia is heavily industrialized. Manufacturing was a key
factor in Soviet days and goods were readily exchanged for raw
materials and energy. Today, Armenia's economy is leaning toward the
agriculture and 44% of the national workforce is employed within
this sector producing mostly fruit and vegetables. 55% of Armenia's
population lives below the poverty line. Armenia's largest export
partner is Belgium due to the export of diamonds. The transport
network of Armenia consists of 852 km of railways and 11,300 km of
highways. The natural gas pipeline measures 900km.
Armenia's climate is best described as highland continental. Summers
are often very hot and the harsh, freezing-cold winters are just the
opposite. Armenia is a land occasionally affected by severe
earthquakes. The hottest recorded temperature in Yereven was 40°C. |
